MARTINEZ A Dixon man who once had a promising future as a
football player was convicted of murder Friday, and now faces 50
years to life in prison.
Marshon Ardoin, 23, did not react when jurors convicted him
Friday after one full day of deliberation of first-degree
murder and of personally using a handgun to kill David Mallard,
28.
Prosecutors say Ardoin was riding in a van with Mallard in May
2016 when he shot him several times and then fled the scene. Two
others in the van then took Mallards body to Bay Point, where
they dumped it in an open field, authorities say.
Im glad that the jury listened carefully to the evidence to
find the truth, and were able to see through the efforts to
obscure it to reach a just verdict for David Mallard,
prosecutor Satish Jallepalli said in a written statement after
the verdict was read.
During trial, Ardoins attorney argued the vans driver had
actually killed Mallard and then pointed the finger at Ardoin to
cover his tracks.
A large group of Mallards loved ones attended the trial and
were present during the verdict, some folding their hands in
prayer as it was read.
Ardoin faces 25 years to life for the murder conviction, plus
another 25 years for the firearm enhancement. It will likely be
months before he is sentenced. Because he was in his early 20s
when the offense took place, he is entitled to a hearing to see
if he deserves a lesser sentence.
Attorneys will reconvene in January to schedule a sentencing
hearing.
Ardoins attorney did not immediately respond to a request for
comment.
Ardoin was a running back for El Cerrito High School and played
for Contra Costa College in 2015. His attorney said during the
trial he had received recruitment letters from colleges with
successful football programs, including the University of Oregon.
